Library Policies: Children

Library staff views service to children as an important part of their job.  Children who wish to use the Library for study, research, and attending programs are greatly encouraged to do so.

However, parents/caregivers need to remember that the Library is a public building open to any and all individuals, and that the children's safety is the responsibility of parents/caregivers not Library Staff. The Library Staff cannot supervise children in the Library nor can they monitor whether children are leaving the Library with a parent, relative, friend or stranger.

NO CHILD UNDER THE AGE OF 10 IS TO BE LEFT UNATTENDED.

While in the Library, children are expected to adhere to the same rules of behavior as adults: eating, drinking, running, and/or boisterous behavior are not allowed.Neilther is use of cell phones.  Talking quietly is acceptable.  If a child in the Library is not using the Library appropriately, or who requires excessive staff attention may be asked to leave the Library after 1 verbal warning.

Parents are expected to be aware of the Library's hours and to make arrangements to meet or transport their children.

If a child is found unattended after 15 minutes police will be notified by staff.

If a child is still in the Library at closing time, an attempt to reach a parent or guardian will be made.  If there is no response, after 15 minutes, the police will be notified.

Library Staff are not responsible for any children who leave the property unattended.
