Sunday August 16, 2009 Safe Routes to Schools Fremont Task Force Looking for Members Careful planning and a commitment to the safety of children who walk and ride bicycles to school has earned 25 communities hosting 41 schools more than $1 million in Safe Routes to School (SRTS) reimbursement grants in NH. Let Fremont be one of them! Commissioner George Campbell Jr of the NH Dept of Transportation (NHDOT) has approved grants recommended by the Statewide Advisory Committee (SAC) and the State’s Regional Planning Commissions (RPCs). More and more communities are recognizing the value of getting kids outside and active, instead of sitting in the back seat of the family vehicle stuck in a school-zone traffic jam. SRTS is an unusual program in that it fosters partnerships among leaders from schools and municipal government, parents, kids, and anyone from the community who is interested. They identify the reasons people in their community drive kids short distances to school, and then plan programs based on specific local conditions. It is a program that can work in rural towns, larger cities, and many places in between. We are hoping to apply for a grant that will support a “startup” program. This will reimburse communities up to $5,000 for the expenses associated with initial surveys of students and parents, preliminary planning, and some educational, encouragement and enforcement efforts. Additional grants for the future would fund up to $15,000 more. For more information or to help with this project, email Mrs. Carol Foley, cfoley@sau83.org, Gifted and Talented Coordinator at the Ellis School. The Town was notified, informally, that the owner of the Brentwood Dam has received State approval to open his gates for emergency repairs. This is posted as information only, and is under no authority of the Town of Fremont NH. The Town has been informed that the Scribner Road Dam is being kept open pending repairs, and to allow for expansion of rains, and to avoid further flooding. THE OPEN SPACE COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU! The Fremont Open Space Committee is a group of people who work together toward preserving the natural resources, wildlife habitat, open spaces and rural character of our town. Over the past few years, the Committee has actively worked to acquire the Glen Oakes Conservation Area, and is trying to promote public awareness of the importance of preserving open space. We are looking for new people to come and see what our committee is about and to encourage you to offer your ideas, talents or knowledge. We have many upcoming projects that are in need of volunteers, such as monitoring programs for town forests, wildlife/bird/plant inventories; committee walks, showshoeing or cross country skiing, wildlife viewing, and more. If any of these things interest you, we would like to hear from you. You can contact the Open Space Committee by email at openspace@fremont.nh.gov or call one of our co-chairs: Janice O'Brien (679 5545) or Kenn Jones (679 5573). |
